What rules apply to the transport of unfit animals?

Anyone who keeps bovines, pigs, sheep or goats and anyone who is responsible for transporting them to slaughter.

Rules for the transport of unfit animals

  • You must not transport an animal unless it is fit for the journey. If in doubt, ask a vet.
  • 'Unfit' animals which are considered fit to travel must be taken to the nearest place for veterinary treatment or to the nearest available place of slaughter.
  • Animals must not be loaded by dragging or pushing, or lifting by mechanical device, except under the direct supervision of a vet.

When can casualty animals be taken to a slaughterhouse?

Casualty animals may be taken to the nearest available place of slaughter if;

  • they are fit to be transported; and
  • they are accompanied by a declaration made by the owner or person in charge which identifies the animals and any veterinary treatment they have had during the last 28 days.
