Councillor Betty Affleck

Ward: Hyde Godley

Annual Report of Activities 2015/16

Participation at Council Meetings and Panels

I attended all Full Council meetings supporting colleagues when required.

As a member of two Scrutiny Panels, Statutory and External Partners and People, I have attended several working group meetings where we challenged and questioned principal people and officers in order to provide the two panels with the relevant information needed to formulate the final scrutiny reports before presenting them to the Executive Cabinet for approval.

I have been an active member on both panels, I have found the meetings to be interesting and informative. My confidence has grown to ask relevant questions applicable to the presentations given.

Participation at District Assemblies

I have attended all District Assemblies listening to concerns residents have raised and answering questions when appropriate.

Participation on Outside Bodies and Partnerships

I am a member of Hyde War Memorial Trust where I attend meetings to discuss the smooth running of the trust, including the Remembrance Day Service held on Werneth Low.

I am a friend of Hattersley Station, whose members do a lot of work in the community.

I am a member of the Stalybridge and Hyde Women's Forum, who hold informative meetings inviting people to discuss current issues.

I am a friend of St Paul's School, I attend meetings and help to organise events.

I attend the Steering Group at Hattersley Hub where we discuss community matters.

Participation on School Governing Bodies

I have made contact with two schools and had discussions with the Headtecahers offering my support if needed. I hope to make contact with the other schools in my area as I progress.

Constituency Work

I hold regular surgeries at Hyde Town Hall and the Hattersley Hub so constituents have an opportunity to attend.

Several constituents have made contact asking for help and advice, ranging from their bins not being emptied to overhanging trees preventing them using footpaths, school admissions have been a worry to many parents and I have been able to give advice on the appeals process.

I have worked with the neighbourhood team on street cleanups.

I have liaised with the Police and residents to help resolve parking problems.

Member Advice Surgeries

I hold regular surgeries twice a month at two different locations and have undertaken walking surgeries by being in the area to discuss issues of concern.

Training and Development

I have attended all the Member training sessions throughout the year and have found them very helpful in fulfilling my role as a Councillor.

Any Other Comments

I have been on a very steep learning curve since being elected last May. I have met so many interesting people. Sometimes this job can be frustrating but also very rewarding, with the continuing help and support I have received, I believe I can fulfill my role as a local Councillor and deliver the service my constituents deserve.
