Ward Work

Most of my time is spent helping ward residents with personal issues. I also help communities groups by directing them towards sources of funding or helping with issues such as planning applications.

Achievements during the year

It has been a difficult time for Local Government because our budget has been cut so drastically. This means that communities cannot rely on their local Council to have the means to always help them that in the way they once did.

In Longdendale I am particularly proud to have been able to support the friends of Hollingworth community group who when they were upset by the poor quality of their Christmas tree decided to take matters into their own hands. The credit is all theirs but I was able to direct them to appropriate help and support. I am proud to have played a small part in helping this impressive group of people not only plant a magnificent Christmas tree but also to expand their activities to include caring for the village and organising community events.

In my role as Chair of People Scrutiny Panel I have chaired a scrutiny into Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) and another into Homelessness. Both of these are important issues that can have a devastating impact on the lives of affected people.

Through my work on scrutiny I have tried to ensure that Tameside is doing all it can to prevent CSE and Homelessness in the borough and is taking the right action in supporting the people that have been affected by it.

I still consider my greatest achievement to be the good relationships I have built up in the community. It is only through these that I can even attempt to achieve the aspirations of the people of Longdendale and support them when they need support. This has been exemplified by my involvement in some very personal issues as well as the bigger day to day business of the ward and of Tameside. I have continued to support as many local community groups as I can.

I continue to work closely with our Member of Parliament, Jonathan Reynolds and earlier this year I joined him and my fellow Councillors and residents to discuss the Hollingworth traffic problems with the under Secretary of State for Transport Andrew. Jones MP.

Any other comments

My hope for the coming year is that despite council cuts I can continue to work with our communities to support them continue their good work and to support the most vulnerable In our ward.
