Annual Report of Activities 2015/16

Participation at Council Meetings and Panels

I have attended Full Council Meetings and Labour Group Meetings. This year I have been a Member of the Statutory and External Partners Scrutiny Panel. The Panel has met frequently throughout the year including a number of working groups on ‘Care at Home, Care at Home information, Healthier Together and Mental Health Pathways. The Panel has also had meetings regarding Tameside General Hospital, Victim Based Crime and the Probation Service.

I have found this work very interesting and challenging. I have enjoyed working closely with my elected colleagues on this panel. I am proud of our achievements and the continued scrutiny of the hospital and the health and wellbeing of the residents of Tameside.

I am also a member of the Enforcement Co-ordination Panel. The Panel has met often throughout the year to discuss enforcement activity which includes Neighbourhood Services, Planning and Building Control, Environmental and Engineering Services. We also discuss waste and enforcement strategy implementation.

This year I have been a member of the Ashton Market Square Project Board and the Ashton Old Baths Project Delivery Board. I have thoroughly enjoyed both these roles and helping to bring to fruition the design of the new market square to complement our historic market. Likewise it has been an honour to serve on the panel that has seen the complete refurbishment and renovation of the Ashton Old Baths. I am proud to have been a member of both these worthy projects.

Participation at District Assemblies

I have served as Chair of Ashton District Assembly. This role has enabled me to become involved in all aspects of the town. As Chair, I have enjoyed attending a wide variety of events during the year.

I have regular meetings with the Integrated Neighbourhood Services Manager for North Tameside and I participate in the grass-roots day to day activities of the Assembly. I have regularly attended the Chair’s Briefing Sessions and DA Chairs Meetings throughout the year.

As DA Chair I have attended the ‘Valuing our Communities’ Participatory Budget Awards event promoted by Tameside MBC. Many worthy local community groups received valuable funding to carry on their good work. The event recognised the local volunteers who give their time and effort to improve their communities.

In my role as DA Chair, I have actively promoted our town by attending events such as ‘Love Your Local Market’, Ashton Food Festival, Heritage Weekend, ‘Small Business Saturday’ and various public events in the Ladysmith Shopping Centre and The Arcades.

As DA Chair I regularly attend the Ashton Town Team meetings.

Participation on Outside Bodies and Partnerships

I regularly attend the St Peter’s Community Gathering where I Chair the meetings each month.

I am Vice Chair of the Board of Ashton Pioneer Homes and have for many years been a trustee of St Peter’s Partnerships.

I am Vice Chair of the Ashton West End Residents Association.

I am a Member of the Friends of King George V Playing Fields, the Friends of Ashton Parish Church and the Neo-natal Knitters Group.

I am a committee member of the Friends of Oxford Park Community Group and regularly attend their meetings.

I regularly attend the Ashton West End and Ashton Town Centre P.A.C.T. meetings.

I enjoy all these roles and have seen the benefits and the positive change we can make in our ward.

Constituency Work

I attend Labour Group Meetings and Ward Meetings. I regularly attend Residents Meetings. I am often in touch with members of the public where they have been able to raise community issues and concerns. I have visited residents on numerous occasions to discuss any problems or concerns in the area. I regularly attend a local coffee morning with residents where I am available should anyone need any help or advice.

I often meet with my colleagues in St Peter’s Ward to discuss local issues. I always aim to deal with matters promptly and keep my constituents fully informed of any progress. I am involved with local housing groups along with my ward colleagues. This year I helped to arrange a senior citizens and volunteers Christmas dinner and party, afternoon teas for senior residents in the ward and, in the spring, a Family Fun Day in Holy Trinity Community Centre for the residents of St Peter’s Ward.

I am a Member of the Ashton Town Team Board, the Ashton Town Square Board and the Ashton Old Baths Board where we are looking to reinvigorate the town centre.

I am also a Member of the Labour Women’s Forum and the Ashton C.L.P.

Members Advice Surgeries

I have held meetings in Ashton Town Hall but residents contact me mainly by email, telephone or in person. I have visited a number of residents in their homes.

Training and Development

During the year I have attended a number of varied training sessions designed especially for Elected Members by Tameside MBC. I have also had training from St Peter’s Partnerships and Ashton Pioneer Homes.

Achievements during the Year

I have attended as Chair of Ashton DA, numerous events to promote our town. I attended the very enjoyable ‘Valuing our Communities’ event that gave awards to deserving community groups.

The Friends of Oxford Park continues to help the park to flourish and once again achieved the coveted Green Flag Award and also an award at the North West In Bloom event in Southport. Likewise the Friends of King George V Playing Fields have had another successful year with new trees being planted, a wild flower meadow and a bee-hive in situ. The Friends Group also worked hard and received a ‘Level 5 Outstanding Award’ at the North West In Bloom event.

St Peter’s Community Gathering had some enjoyable community events including a Fun Day in Holy Trinity. The event was attended by our MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, Ms Angela Rayner.

We also held a senior citizens and volunteers Christmas dinner and party for our residents. It was enjoyed by everyone and we are hoping to repeat it again next Christmas.

Ashton West End Residents Association held an Easter Fun Day and refreshments and hosted several afternoon tea events during the year. Doorstep Green Residents have planted new shrubs and flowers in their park which continues to be well used.

I was happy to visit and present certificates of competency at the ‘Digital Diamonds’ computer suite where computer sessions are held in the Linda Fletcher Community Base at Ryecroft House. Residents can access computer training and any help they may need.

As Chair of Ashton DA I attended the Heritage Weekend events around our town.
