Christmas is a fun and exciting time with lots of new noises and words. Talk to your baby about what they can see and hear. You could use musical instruments to make sounds of the sleigh bells, twinkle stars etc.

Babies learn through experience. At Christmas and winter there are lots of new experiences that babies may come across. You could try letting your baby experience new things through messy play e.g. with tinsel and baubles letting them feel them and play with them.

If your child is at a nursery or play group they may be doing lots of Christmas stories and Nursery Rhymes. Join in with these and do the actions. You could even try missing out a word or action to see if your child can fill in the gap.

If you are thinking about buying presents this festive period there are lots of toys that could promote language. Toys where you press a button and something happens e.g. spinning tops and light up toys are great for babies and younger children. Toys that develop your child’s imaginations such as character toys, ‘Mr Potato Head’ farm set, tea set etc are a nice idea for children a little older.
