Information on the Assessment Process

What is the Assessment?

If you want to continue with your application following the preparation course of a fostering worker will carry out a number of visits to you. These are usually in your home but some could be at our offices if this is more convenient for you.

This process will involve the whole household. A lot of personal information is gathered about your history to date and present circumstances which help us to find out what you can offer a child. This stage consists of approximately six to eight visits to you, each lasting about 2 hours.

We will also visit other members of the household, your own children, and your personal referees. We will also contact your employers. Once we have gathered all this information we will compile a report. You will be fully involved in preparing this report with us and there is space for you to make your own comments about the training and assessment process.

If we do not feel able to recommend your approval to the fostering panel you have the right to appeal this decision.

The whole fostering process from initial enquiry to approval should take no longer than 8 months.

If you would like more information about the assessment process, call the Fostering Team on the number below. If you have an allocated worker simply ask to be put through to them. If you do not have an allocated worker and would like more information, or your allocated worker isn’t available, you can ask to be put through to the Duty worker who will also be able to provide you with information.
