Blockages of gullies/grids usually occur after rainfall, if this has been significant, ponding can occur around both blocked and unblocked grids. This is often due to the large amount of water rather than a blockage.

How often are the gullies cleansed?

All roadside gullies are generally cleansed at least once a year and twice on main routes.

What happens if I drop my keys down a grid?

We can arrange for the Engineering DSO to attend, there may be a charge for this. Please telephone 0161 342 8355.

Who is responsible?

The Local Authority is responsible for maintaining the highway drainage system only. This includes road gullies; channels and drains; roadside drainage ditches; flooding on and because of water from the highway. We will also investigate collapses in the highway.

Most gullies on unadopted/private roads are not maintained by the Local Authority and will not be attended to by the Highways division other than on request but there may be a charge. The Engineering DSO however will undertake work for private individuals.

Is there a charge?

We do not charge to unblock a gully on the highway. In some circumstances we may charge to unblock gullies on unadopted roads or private land/driveways.

How long will you take to fix?

All calls are assessed and dealt with on a priority basis ie. a blocked gully that is causing flooding will receive a higher priority.
