Gully Maintenance

The Gully Cleansing Service is provided to fulfil a statutory duty by ensuring that the highway is adequately drained.

The aim of the service is to provide cyclic gully cleansing of all roadside gullies, to assess complaints of blocked gullies and flooding, and to undertake minor and major highway drainage schemes to repair or improve the existing system.

We aim to cleanse all roadside gullies a minimum of once per year with those on major highway routes being cleansed twice per year.

Gullies are cleansed in accordance with a scheduled programme based on the Council's ward boundaries

Reported blocked gullies may be cleansed reactively after assessment or will wait until the programmed cleanse.

Currently footway gullies are cleansed upon request or when a problem is noticed. Highway drainage repair and replacement works are programmed throughout the year, based on feedback from gully crews and reports from members of the public and highway inspectors.

We are currently working on providing the information about the gully cleansing programme on-line. However, in the mean-time if you want to know when your street is next programmed for a cyclic cleanse, please contact us with your Street Name and Town.
