Manual Handling

Do any of your work activities involved people lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling any load? If so, you need to assess the risk of injury to your workers posed by manual handling. (You need to ask yourself the following questions)

Can the activity be done by using mechanical aids, e.g. trolleys, sack trucks, etc? If not, then the manual handling operation should be assessed by considering:

  1. the task to be carried out
  2. the load to be moved
  3. the environment in which handling takes place
  4. the capability of the individual involved in the manual handling

Failure to properly assess the handling operation can lead to people receiving injuries such as bruising, cuts, hernias, fractures. Proper training of staff is required and should follow the following "Guide to Manual Lifting" chart.
