First Aid at Work

All employers and self-employed people must provide adequate first aid arrangements which will differ depending on the size of the company, the hazards and risks inherent in the workplace. The following table gives guidance as to the required numbers of appointed persons or first aiders:

Category of Risk Numbers employed at any location Suggested number of first aid personnel

Lower Risk

e.g. shops and offices, libraries

Fewer than 50

At least one appointed person

50 - 100 At least one first aider
More than 100 One additional first aider for every 100 employed

Medium Risk

e.g. light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing

Fewer than 20

At least one appointed person

20 - 100 At least one first aider for every 60 employed (or part thereof)
More than 100 One additional first aider for every 100 employed

Higher Risk

e.g. most construction, slaughterhouses, chemical manufacture, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments

Fewer than 5

At least one appointed person

5 - 50 At least one first aider
More than 50 One additional first aider for every 50 employed

All workplaces require a first aid box (including transport vehicles used for work). The contents of the first aid kit should be linked to the risks in the workplace but as a guide and where there is no special risk in the workplace, a minimum stock of first aid items would be:

  • a leaflet giving general guidance on first aid e.g. HSE leaflet Basic Advice on First Aid at Work (see Appendix 2) ;
  • 20 individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings (assorted sizes);
  • two sterile eye pads;
  • four individually wrapped triangular bandages (preferably sterile);
  • six safety pins;
  • six medium sized (approximately 12cm x 12cm) individually wrapped sterile unmedicated wound dressings;
  • one pair of disposable gloves

You should not keep tablets or medicines in the first aid box.

The above is a suggested contents list only; equivalent but different items will be considered acceptable.
