Summer Reading Challenge 2023

Could you skip, scoot or take the bus to the library? You could even play a game on the way! Get ready to read!
Join the Ready, Set, Read! team and their animal mascots for the Summer Reading Challenge as they use their skills to weave their way through a summer obstacle course. The Challenge will celebrate play and participation, encouraging you to engage in games and sports in any way that best suits you!

Children can sign up to take part in Ready, Set, Read! at Tameside libraries this summer holidays. It’s fun, friendly and absolutely free! All you have to do is read 6 library books and collect rewards along the way. The challenge launches on Saturday 8 July and runs until Christmas, so there is plenty of time to get on with that reading!

What do I do?
- Register for the Challenge at any Tameside library.* You need to be a library member to take part, but it’s free to join the library. You’ll get a special Ready, Set, Read! pack!
- Choose books to read (anything from the library that you like!).
- Read your books and write them on your Ready, Set, Read! pack.
- Collect special stickers (some of them are smelly!) as you read your books as well as a special bookmark and a door hanger
What do I get when I complete the challenge?
- A Gadgeteers medal
- A Gadgeteers certificate (children who finish before Saturday 16 September have these presented at Tameside primary schools in October 2023)
- If you finish before Saturday 16 September, entry into a special prize draw! The first prize is a £25 Active Choice Card to use at Active Tameside venues, plus a reading goody bag! 2 runners up will also receive a reading goody bag.
What else can I do?
- Come along to our free activities! There’s lots going on for children in Tameside libraries this summer.
- Log onto the Ready, Set, Read! website to write reviews, play games and have fun.
- Tell your friends about Ready, Set, Read! and get them to take part too!
Special Pre-school Challenge!
Pre-school children can also take part in a special Ready, Set, Read! challenge! Children who will not be at primary school in September can collect a Ready, Set, Read! Mini-Challenge card on which to collect stickers when they read books, plus a gold medal sticker when they complete the challenge.
*If you usually only use the library during Open+ hours and want to take part, please send us a message using the link below, including the name and library card number of children wanting to take part and the library you go to. Rewards can then be left in the reserved book area in the library. Alternatively you may wish to collect all the rewards at the end of the Challenge during staffed hours.
Fuel4Fun holiday camps
This year, children at Fuel4Fun holiday camps have had the chance to take part in Ready, Set, Read! while at the camps.
If your child has started the Ready, Set, Read! Challenge at Fuel4Fun but hasn’t finished it yet, they can do so by coming into any Tameside Library. Tell the library staff that they joined at Fuel4Fun and where they’re up to with the Challenge and the staff will get them going to finish the Challenge.
If your child has finished the Challenge at Fuel4Fun but isn’t going to a Tameside Primary school in September, they can come into the library to collect a certificate. Children who have finished and are attending a Tameside Primary in September will get a certificate in school.
We offer all Tameside primary schools an assembly to promote the Challenge before the end of term. If you work in a school, click here for more information.
