The Neuroinclusive Libraries Project is an initiative by Tameside Libraries aimed at improving accessibility and inclusion for neurodivergent people. It recognises that individuals with conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences may experience libraries in varied ways, and seeks to make adjustments that support more comfortable and meaningful engagement.

The project involves working with neurodivergent individuals, families, and community partners to identify barriers and co-develop solutions. This includes staff training, sensory-friendly adaptations, and inclusive programming. By making small but thoughtful changes, the project aims to ensure that library services are more responsive to a wider range of needs and preferences.

The project will feature monthly special events for different ages as well as the launch of quiet hours. Here is what is coming up next:

Sensory Storytimes

Sight/Sound/Touch/Smell story aimed at SEND children and their families told using sensory props.

Held once a month at Hattersley Library.

 

Body Doubling Writing Sessions

First session Tuesday 3rd February 5:30-7:30pm

Then 1st Tuesday of the month 5:30-7:30pm at Ashton Library

Boost your productivity by writing in the same room as others. Drop-in session for all ages.

 

Autism for the Arts: Creative Sessions

Craft and arts sessions aimed at neurodivergent individuals and their friends & families.

10:30am - 12:30pm

Sat 14th February: Preschool Session  - Droylsden Library

Sat 14th March: Children (4-11)  - STALYBRIDGE Library

Sat 18th April: Teen (11-16) session - Ashton Library

Sat 23rd May: Adult session (16+) - Dukinfield Library

 

Quiet Hours

Each library branch has a dedicated hour every week in which we endeavor to reduce noise and don't hold any other events.
