We offer a wide range of activities and events for adults and children throughout the year across all of our museum and gallery sites.

 Little Hands

Join Simon the Storyteller every Thursday during term time for an hour of fun, storytelling and crafts for preschool children. The session starts at 10am and is costs just £2 with £1 for additional siblings. No need to book, just drop in.

Meets at Portland Basin Museum every Thursday Term time only 10am -11am

‘I Made It!’ Adult Masterclass: Introduction to Needle Felting
Led by local artist and crafter Beverley Fish you will be guided through the process of ‘needle felting’ from initial ideas and getting used to using the equipment to finished piece of art; perhaps you could create a special gift or something for yourself.

I Made It! Adult Masterclass: Introduction to Leatherwork
Fancy starting a new hobby? Local crafter Caroline Coates will introduce you to the wonderful world of working with leather.
Step by step introduction creating both your own leather book and purse.

 ‘I Made It!’ Adult Masterclass: Introduction to Typography
Led by local artist and designer Rachael Elwell, you will be introduced and guided through the process of creating your own illustrated typography - from being taught the basics of graphic and illustrative design to fun drawing and collage exercises. You will leave the masterclass with new found skills in designing your own unique alphabet and creating your own decorative letter forms as a series of final artworks.

Reminiscence Sessions

Reminisce about days gone by. Enjoy the here and now. Using objects, photographs and documents from the museum service’s collections we can offer sessions on the following themes, with more coming soon:

  • Coronation Day 1953
  • 1940’s Make do and mend
  • Seaside holidays
  • 1950s national service
  • Soldiers’ souvenirs through the ages
  • Made in Tameside

A friendly quilting and patchwork group. We meet every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. 1-3pm Free
