Arthur John Berry
Early Life
Arthur came from Knutsford, Cheshire. His father was Mr J. Berry of 8 Green Street, Knutsford. As a boy, Arthur attended Egerton School.
Service Life
Sergeant Arthur Berry (3378, 250959) served with ‘A’ Company, 1/6th Battalion the Manchester Regiment, having enlisted in Manchester. For his service in the army, Arthur received the Allied Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1914-1915 Star. Arthur first went abroad, to Gallipoli, in October 1915. Arthur was awarded the Military Medal for bravery during an action at Bihucourt and Bucquoy on 25 March 1918 (London Gazette: 27 June 1918). We Shall Remember Him
Arthur was killed in action on 22 April 1918, aged 23. He is buried in Couin New British Cemetery, France (Grave/Memorial Reference – C.36). His Next of Kin Memorial Plaque is on display in the Museum of the Manchester Regiment, in the Forshaw Gallery
