Service Life

Private Arnold Davies (47728) enlisted in Denton, Lancashire and served with the 12th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. For his service in the army, Arnold was awarded the Allied Victory Medal and British War Medal.

We Shall Remember Him

Arnold was wounded by shrapnel whilst serving in the Arras sector. He was later transferred to Ward J1 of the War hospital, Bradford, Yorkshire. Complications set in following an operation and on 2 July 1917 Arnold died. Whilst in hospital, Arnold wrote a letter to his father describing the circumstances that led to his wounding. This letter, along with a sepia photograph of Arnold can be seen in Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre (MR4/17/277). Arnold is buried in Bradford (Scholemoor) Cemetery (Grave/Memorial Reference – Screen Wall III.C.2084) His Next of Kin Memorial Plaque is on display in the Museum of the Manchester Regiment in the Forshaw Gallery.
