George Sutton

Early Life

George was born and lived in Ardwick, Manchester and was the son of Mrs Susan Francis Sutton of 4 Norburn Road, Slade Lane, Longsight, Manchester.

Service Life

Private George Sutton (1518) enlisted in Manchester and served with the 1/8th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

For his service in the army, which included going overseas to Egypt in September 1914, George was awarded the Allied Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1914-15 Star.

We Shall Remember Him

George was 21 years old when he was killed in action on 7 August 1915. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey (Grave/Memorial Reference – Panel 158 to 170).

His next of Kin Memorial Plaque is on display in the Museum of the Manchester Regiment in the Ladysmith Gallery memorial cabinet drawer 1.
