George Halliwell
Early Life
George was the son of Catharine Halliwell of 27 March Lane, Wigan and was born in St George’s, Wigan, Lancashire.
Service Life
Private George Halliwell (1228) enlisted in Wigan and served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. He went abroad, to Gallipoli, on 6 May 1915. For his service in the army Joseph was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal.
We Shall Remember Him
George died of wounds on the 18 July 1915 aged 32 and is buried in the Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Turkey (Grave/Memorial Reference – F.87). His Next of Kin Memorial Plaque is on display in the Museum of the Manchester Regiment in the Ladysmith Gallery memorial cabinet drawer 4.
