William Henry Martin

Early Life

William was born in Millom, Cumberland.

Service Life

Sergeant William Henry Martin (1188, 41493) enlisted in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire and served with the 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

For his service in the army, which included going overseas to Gallipoli in May 1915, William was awarded the Allied Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1914-1915 Star. William’s medals can be seen in the Museum of the Manchester Regiment.

We Shall Remember Him

William was killed in action on 17 November 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France (Grave/Memorial Reference – Pier and Face 13A and 14C).

His Next of Kin Memorial Plaque is on display in the Museum of the Manchester Regiment in the Ladysmith Gallery memorial cabinet drawer 2.
