Greener streets, safer spaces, and better connections for Denton are now officially approved.

A bold new vision for Denton town centre has been approved by Tameside Council’s Executive Cabinet. Backed by £16.8 million in UK Government funding (subject to agreement) and additional support from Transport for Greater Manchester, this once-in-a-generation project will transform Denton into a greener, safer, and better-connected place.

Plan highlights

Greener streets and civic spaces with climate-resilient planting and landscaping.
Enhanced walking and cycling routes, with over 1.1 km to promote active travel.
Revitalised town centre streets such as Manchester Road and Market Street, creating welcoming spaces for businesses and visitors.
Improved public space on Queen Street and upgrades around the Festival Hall and Denton Town Hall.
Child-friendly school streets and upgraded wayfinding to make the town centre more accessible.

Delivery Timeline

By March 2026: Phase 1 early works will be complete.

2026–2028: There will be a phased delivery of public realm and active travel improvements.

Ongoing: The Council are also seeking further funding to expand the programme.

The masterplan has been developed by Planit IE, working alongside Civic, PLACED, Placemarque, and SFP, in collaboration with the Council’s Strategic Growth Team.
