You Said We Did Tameside Council Statement of Community Involvement 2020 Update

 

We Asked

The Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) sets out how Tameside Council will involve the local community, stakeholders and other organisations in preparing and revising local planning documents and making decisions on planning applications.


The current SCI was adopted in 2016. Local Planning Authorities are required to carry out a review of their SCIs every five years from the adoption date. There have been a number of changes to planning legislation, policy and guidance that need to be reflected in this update. In addition, there is a need to reflect on the measures implemented to help combat the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and the implications for planning-related consultations. The draft SCI has been prepared to respond to the demand of social distancing to ensure effective community engagement continues to take place during this time.


The Council welcomed comments and suggestions on any of the detail included within the SCI, including on the techniques and methods of engagement proposed.

The consultation included an open-ended question asking for comments on the draft SCI. In total, 12 responses were received; these included 7 from national and local bodies and organisations and 5 from members of the public. Comments received proposed amending the SCI to include additional requirements to consult specific bodies/organisations, enhanced engagement between the Council and objectors to planning applications, to continue to consult with groups that may no longer be meeting due to coronavirus restrictions, and amending the procedures for Speakers Panel.


Other comments received include stating a need to protect open spaces, requiring developers to demonstrate they have consulted with the community, and including reference of these consultations and other discussions within Officer Speakers Panel reports.

We Did

The consultation responses were analysed and where comments related to points of working practice these have been shared with the Development Manager and given consideration. The SCI was considered at Executive Cabinet on 2 November 2020 and it was agreed the 2020 SCI be published
