COVID-19 TEMPORARY SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES

This table presents a list of measures being developed, in Tameside, to aid people in maintaining social distancing whilst walking and cycling and accessing public transport.  As specific proposals are developed further details will be made available on this webpage. 
Residents directly affected by any new scheme, which requires a temporary, permanent or experimental traffic order will be contacted as part of the statutory consultation process. 

Initiatives

Proposals

1. Supporting Social Distancing

Creation of additional footway space by addressing pinch-points, adding safe crossings and removing street clutter.

2. Upgrade of Cycle Lanes

 

Review of existing cycle lanes to identify where improvements can easily be made to make cycling trips safer and more comfortable for commuting essential trips or leisure.  This may include the introduction of light segregation where applicable.

3. Introduction of New Cycle Lanes

 

Introduction of new cycle lanes, where there is available carriageway width and reduced traffic volumes making cycling trips safer and more comfortable for commuting essential trips or leisure.  This may include the introduction of light segregation where applicable.

4. Creation of “Quiet Streets”

Temporary short duration, resident led closures, of residential streets to support social distancing whilst walking and cycling for essential trips and exercise by limiting through vehicular traffic.  

Temporary closure of residential streets to vehicular traffic to stop rat running, and reduce vehicular speeds and support delivery of “Quiet Streets”.

5. Introduction of new signage

Introduction of signage to promote social distancing, considerate behaviours and raise the profile of the available walking and cycling routes.

6. Support for Schools

 

Support being offered to schools to promote safe active travel for staff and pupils once schools re-open.

7. Mayor’s Challenge Fund scheme -         Albion Way, Ashton

Acceleration of the design and delivery of the Mayor’s Challenge Fund scheme on Albion Way, Ashton.  This scheme was previously part of the Mayor’s Challenge consultation which was completed in March 2020.  Details of the plans can be found at: www.tameside.gov.uk/mcf  Ashton Streetscape (Albion Way).
