The Sanctuary - Self Help
Struggling To Cope? If you are in crisis overnight from 8pm - 6am, call us on 0300 003 7029

We provide support to adults who are experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts or are in crisis.The Sanctuary offers a space to talk and assistance with coping after the initial crisis.

This service is available to residents (ages 18+) living in:

  •  Manchester, Trafford, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Glossop, Wigan and Leigh – from 8pm – 6am
  • Bolton – from 4pm – 12am (midnight)
The Sanctuary offers a space to talk and assistance with coping after the initial crisis. Overnight, The Sanctuary does not have beds so is not a place to sleep over. On the night of a visit, you can stay as long as you wish between 8pm and 6am. Some people choose to leave The Sanctuary once their initial crisis has passed and they have been able to calm down; others may need to stay longer. The length of your stay will vary according to your needs.

Don’t struggle alone overnight. If you’re experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts or are in crisis, call us from 8pm - 6am.

B-eat

Beat is the UK's only nationwide organisation supporting people affected by eating disorders, their family members and friends, and campaigning on their behalf. We are also the world's largest eating disorders charity.

Our activities are designed to increase knowledge, awareness and understanding of eating disorders; to provide support, help and information to people directly affected; and to increase the understanding and skills of professional staff.

We run telephone helplines; local support groups; and this website, which includes information, message boards and online chat. Last year we had direct contact with 250,000 individuals, and many, many thousands more through our website and the media.

We are lucky enough to have a great network of volunteers who support us; around 80% of our work is carried out by volunteers. They work on the helplines, run support groups, speak to the media, get involved in research, and carry out vital local fundraising.

North West Centre for Eating Disorders (NWCED)

Location: Davenport, Stockport 
NWCED provides, individual, family and group treatments for anorexia, bulemia, compulsive over-eating and associated eatng and weight distress.  The service is NHS funded by the NHS although other areas may access the service privately or via NHS funded referrals from the relevant primary care trust.

Sane

SANE is a UK-wide charity working to improve quality of life for people affected by mental illness. SANE has three main objectives linked to our aims and outcomes:

  1. To raise awareness and combat stigma about mental illness, educating and campaigning to improve mental health services;
  2. To provide care and emotional support for people with mental health problems, their families and carers as well as information for other organisations and the public.
  3. To initiate research into the causes and treatments of serious mental illness such as schizophrenia and depression and the psychological and social impact of mental illness.

Anxiety UK

Anxiety UK is a member of the Association of Mental Health Providers. We work to relieve and support those living with anxiety and anxiety-based depression by providing information, support and understanding via an extensive range of services, including 1:1 therapy. We work regularly with external agencies and healthcare professionals to improve services for those living with anxiety and anxiety-based depression and also campaign to raise awareness of the conditions.

We can provide support and help if you’ve been diagnosed with, or suspect you may have an anxiety condition. We can also help you deal with specific phobias such as fear of spiders, blushing, vomiting, being alone, public speaking, heights – in fact, any fear that’s stopped you from getting on with your life.

Families in Mind
Families in Mind is a service for the whole family to access together.
Families can work on issues such as: communication skills, reducing conflicts, increasing family strengths and understanding family roles.

The services are available for families across Tameside, Oldham and Glossop. We run appointments at various locations and at various days and times.

The  Anthony Seddon Fund

We are a small mental health charity passionate about helping local people living with mental illness and its effects. We advance awareness and educate the general public, in particular children and young people, in all areas relating to mental health and well-being. We aim to improve the quality of life of those affected by mental health issues, their families, friends and carers, in Tameside by promoting and protecting their physical and mental health through support, education, practical advice and provisions of financial assistance. Our work is conducted alongside a wide variety of other organisations and agencies, to help us to meet these objectives. We are run entirely by unpaid volunteers. The vast majority have lived experience of mental illness, or are actively caring for someone who has. Our charity shop and well-being centre are based centrally in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Tameside.

No Panic

Helping you break the chain of anxiety disorders

No Panic is a registered charity which helps people who suffer from Panic Attacks, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and other related anxiety disorders including those people who are trying to give up Tranquillizers.

No Panic also provides support for the carers of people who suffer from anxiety disorders.

Severe anxiety and phobic disorders are a major and widespread problem. Recent surveys indicate that they affect up to 18% of the population of the United Kingdom.

  •  Up to 2 million with Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder
  •  Up to 2 million on Tranquillizers, many long term

About 75% of anxiety disorder sufferers do not get professional help of any kind.

No Panic specialises in self-help recovery, providing people with the skills they need to manage their condition and work towards recovery, enabling them to lead more fulfilled lives.

All of No Panic’s support services are provided over the telephone to ensure that we can reach more sufferers regardless of how isolated they are. Also in many areas support services for mental health are very poor and not easily accessible for many sufferers.

Each year our helpline answers 75,000 calls per year with approximately 50% of that number not being able to get through due to call volume. In order to keep up with the increasing demand for our services it is essential that No Panic find a minimum of 40 new volunteers to train and work on our helpline each year, as well as to delivery our telephone support services.

We give you the information and support you need to deal with it all. Because you can. Because you’re awesome.

We’ll connect you to experts and your peers who’ll give you the support and tools you need to take on any challenge you’re facing – for everything from homelessness to finding a job, from money to mental health, from break-ups to drugs.

We’re a free and confidential multi-channel service. That means that you choose how you access our support, without the worry of anyone else finding out. Whether it be through our articles and video content online or our phone, email, peer to peer and counselling services – we put the control in your hands. You can even volunteer with us too. We want to be the first place young people turn to get support. Sometimes what you’re told at school or at home just doesn’t cut it. We’re here whenever you need us, wherever you are. We can ensure you have all the best information to make the right choices for yourself.

Men Heal

We are a mental health organisation aimed at men. However we are also interested in creating dialog with women who know a man who has suffered or currently suffers from a mental health issue.

The suicide rate for men is up to three times higher than for women, and with Robin Williams recent suicide (I’m writing this a few days after on 19th August 2014), I feel driven to set up this website to reach out to men who are suffering from depression or anxiety.


Self Injury Support

  • Our aims
  • To offer support to women in emotional distress, and particularly to those who self-injure.

  • To develop services, and raise awareness of self-injury and mental health issues, through training and providing information.
 

We have carried out a lot of research into the experiences and needs of women who self-injure. As well as helping to shape our own services, this work has also helped people:

  • get a better understanding of self-injury; and
  • find the best ways of working with people who self-injure.

We have also written ‘good practice guidelines’ for working with people who self-injure.

 

How we work:

Self injury Support is run by a management group. TESS and our Women’s Self-injury Helpline are staffed by volunteers, who receive full training and support for their work. Volunteers work alongside paid workers in carrying out many aspects of the organisation’s work.


Life Signs - Self-injury Guidance & Network Support

LifeSIGNS (Self-Injury Guidance & Network Support) is an online, user-led voluntary organisation, founded in 2002 to create understanding about self-injury and provide information and support to people of all ages affected by self-injury. We recognise self-injury and self-harm as a way of coping with distressing experiences and difficult emotions, and we encourage people to reflect on the issues behind their self-injury, and to develop and explore alternative coping mechanisms.
LifeSIGNS is managed and led by people with personal experience of self-injury, and we are non-judgemental, non-directional, and respectful of our members’ and visitors’ life experiences and perceptions. The LifeSIGNS website is the centre of our vibrant community, and provides access to all of our services.
We aim to support all people who are affected in anyway by self-injury within the United Kingdom and beyond. We support people using self-injury, and family and friends of people who self-injure, and professionals (including health care workers) who are interested in self-injury.


Calm Zone

  • Offering support to men in the UK, of any age, who are down or in crisis via our helpline, webchat and website
  • Challenging a culture that prevents men seeking help when they need it, through CALMzine and campaigns such as #ManDictionaryand #BiggerIssues
  • Pushing for changes in policy and practice so that suicide is better prevented, via partnerships such as The Alliance of Suicide Prevention Charities (TASC), the National Suicide Prevention Alliance(NSPA)
  • Supporting those bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP), hosted by CALM, which aims to ensure that everyone bereaved or affected by suicide is offered and receives timely and appropriate support
  • CALM is about, for and on behalf of men. We use young men’s peers, their voices and interests to reach them. We seek to work with clubs, venues and brands with voices that men respect, feel comfortable with and trust to get our message across.
  • We believe that there is a cultural barrier preventing men from seeking help as they are expected to be in control at all times, and failure to be seen as such equates to weakness and a loss of masculinity.We believe that if men felt able to ask for and find help when they need it then hundreds of male suicides could be prevented.
  • We’re a campaign for all men, not just ‘service users’. All of us, at one time or another and regardless of gender, can hit a crisis and so we could all do with support when things get tough.
 

Minds Matter


​Minds Matter is a step 1 Mental Health provision that helps with everyday issues that affect mental wellbeing.

We support people aged 16 or over who either live in Tameside and Glossop and/or are registered with a T&G.
GP whose low mood and anxiety are caused primarily by social issues, these could include debt, loneliness and isolation.

We have a team of Mental Wellbeing Practitioners, Peer Support Workers and Counsellors who can help people accessing the service to manage and overcome their difficulties through guided self-help and/or peer support. We provide counselling around adjustment to loss, such as bereavement, relationship or employment.

We can help you to:
– Address current problems
– Gain a new understanding of your difficulties and develop new ways of coping
– Make positive changes in your life
– Talk about your difficulties in a non-judgemental and supportive environment
