Staff Checks and Qualifications

Will all the staff be qualified to care for my child and are they checked in any way?

Not all the staff caring for children will be qualified, but all will have had a DBS check.

Childminders

Do not have to be qualified, but will have undertaken a training course provided by a range of establishments, for example: Ashton 6th Form College or Tameside College. Many childminders will have children of their own and may have a professional qualification. A number of childminders are undertaking professional qualifications including NVQ Level 3 qualification. All childminders will have been subject to a DBS check, as will their partners and any regular visitors.

Sessional Care

National Standards insist that 50% of workers in sessional care settings have an appropriate qualification and that the registered supervisor has a professional qualification and relevant experience. There are a number of training courses, some organised by Tameside Early Years Provider Development Team, that sessional care workers can attend. All sessional care workers will have been subject to statutory checks and will have made a declaration in respect of criminal offences.

Full Day Care

National Standards insist that 50% of workers in full day care settings have a professional qualification and that the registered manager has an appropriate qualification and relevant experience. Many workers in the full day care sector have NVQ Level 3 or equivalent. All full day care workers will have been subject to statutory checks and will have made a declaration in respect of criminal offences. Staff working with food should also have appropriate qualifications, training and/or experience.

If in doubt ask about the staff working in the particular setting that you are interested in placing your child.
