Newton Wood War Memorial

Site:

Victoria Road, next to the Victoria public house.

History:

Col. John Wood M.P (then for Stalybridge and Dukinfield, later for Stalybridge and Hyde) unveiled this memorial on October 13, 1917, to perpetuate the memory of the men who had joined the colours.

The cost was defrayed by subscriptions from the inhabitants and friends of Newton Wood. The designs were prepared by Mr Samuel Hague, borough surveyor, and the carving and erection was completed by Messrs J.J. Hirst and Son, Denton.

It is of the classic order with grooved entablatures, surrounded by a crown, beneath which are the words "In Honour”. The monument is 13ft high and 4 and a half foot square at the base.
