Ashton Market
Proposals: Ashton Market Hall
To support our traders as they're getting back into business after the terrible fire at the Market Hall, we've put the new layout of Ashton Phoenix Market Hall so you can find all your favourite stalls.
The world famous Ashton Market is situated right in the heart of Tameside. With over 140 stalls, the range is enormous and the atmosphere electric! Here, you will find a whole array of tempting bargains, including clothes, electrical goods, bedding, fruit and vegetables, and household items, to name but a few!
Immediately adjacent to the Market, is the Market Hall. The Lord of the Manor, Sir Thomas de Assheton, was granted a King's Charter to hold a market in 1284. Some 600 years later, in 1829, an enclosure for butcher's stalls was completed in the centre of Ashton-under-Lyne.
From this new beginning grew, what eventually became, Ashton Market Hall. Now replaced by the Phoenix Market Hall, you will find just about anything you might be looking for. A wide range of food is on offer, including several butchers, greengrocers and fish specialist, together with a diverse range of non-food offerings.
Ashton Farmers and Producers Market
On the last Sunday of each month, Ashton's famous market ground hosts a Farmers' and Producers' Market.
With over 70 stalls it is the biggest in the region, and new traders are booking stalls all the time.
The Farmers' and Producers' Market, previously recognised as the Best in The North West by the NFU, has also been voted the Best Farmers' Market in the North West by readers of the Observer Food Magazine.
There are a wide range of food products sold by the producers including Venison, Salad and Vegetables, Cheeses, Honey, Chutneys, Lamb, Smoked Fish, Ostrich, Home Bake, Fudge and lots more. If you're peckish on the way round the market, you'll find a Hog Roast being freshly carved for you to enjoy.
In addition, local craftsfolk and artists offer their own work ranging from Watercolours to Wheatbags, Aromatherapy products to hand-made Greetings Cards, Soaps to hand-made Babywear, the list goes on and on.
The usual Sunday giant table-top sale continues on the other side of the market ground so look out for collectables or just a plain old fashioned bargain. Street Entertainment is on hand to give the whole day a party atmosphere and there are often demonstrations by local organisations throughout the day.
The market provides permanent, covered stalls so, even if the weather is mixed, it needn't spoil your enjoyment.
You'll find that many of the shops around this busy market town - including Marks and Spencer and Woolworths - are also open on Sundays, so, plan to make a day of it.
To find out when the next Farmers and Producers Market is on, go to our Events Calendar.
Online application forms are available for a stall on the Farmers and Producers Market.
