Street Name Plates and Numbers

The Council is responsible for ensuring that street name plates are provided and fitted in suitable positions.

It is important, as we travel further from our local area, that we can find where we are and where we want to go quickly and efficiently. Most importantly it is vital in the event of an urgent situation that you and your street can be located quickly by the Emergency Services.

The Council is also responsible for repair and maintenance of street name plates when this becomes necessary either due to accidental damage, vandalism or normal wear and tear.

Streets on new developments are normally named prior to people taking occupancy and house numbers are allocated at the same time.

Once planning permission for building a new development has been granted the developer suggests a series of names for the new streets. These suggestions are then taken to the Local District Assembly who approve the naming of the street. In rare instances where none of the suggested names are acceptable, discussions with the developer take place to find an acceptable alternative.

Details of the new street names and house numbers are then forwarded to all the emergency services and the Post Office.

If you have any problems with a missing street nameplate or any other problem, please report it online.
