Let’s talk about Hyde

Hyde Town Hall

We are looking to shape Hyde town centre for the future and to create a vision and masterplan for regenerating it. We want to make it a place that everyone can enjoy visiting and spending time in, and most importantly somewhere they can be proud of.

We have appointed HemingwayDesign and GL Hearn to lead the development of an exciting new vision, masterplan and strategy for Hyde town centre.

They have had their ears to the ground on a mission to discover what local residents, communities and stakeholders from Hyde and across the borough, really want to see and need in the town.

Since September 2022, meetings and workshops have been held with a range of businesses, residents’ groups, students, and other stakeholders.

The initial fact-finding survey received over 1,300 responses. Your valuable insight and comments have helped to shape the draft vision and masterplan.

Feedback so far, has helped outline what are felt to be the common areas and themes for improvements which would not only celebrate and utilise the town’s important assets and public spaces but also help develop a better market and shopping offer with improved surroundings.

Animation of the market square was also felt to be a high priority in order to accommodate cultural events and make it a place where people want to spend time. It is also clear that people feel shop frontage improvements will benefit the shopping centre and businesses across the town.

A re-imagined shopping area with more greenery and landscaping, improved public realm, and better pedestrian areas, including traffic calming measures to create safe and welcoming environment would also help to make Hyde a great place to live, work and visit and meet the needs of current and future generations.

These views have been used to shape the draft plans and we carried out a public consultation for a four week period from Monday 12 June until Sunday 9 July 2023 and received over 1800 responses.

The creation of the masterplan and strategy for Hyde is an important step in the regeneration process as it will allow the Council to seek funding sources to support the plans for the future.

The masterplan can be viewed here and has now been approved at Executive Cabinet.

Hyde to be part of £7m funding boost

The Government has announced that Hyde town centre will be one of 10 high streets to receive a £237,000 seed funding and become part of the High Street Accelerator pilot programme.

The aim of the High Street Accelerators is to create partnerships that empower residents and community organisations to work together on long-term regeneration plans. After the initial funding there will be a further opportunity to apply for a share of up to £5 million to improve Hyde’s green spaces and move forward on projects that will create more pleasant environments for residents to meet and socialise in.

This will provide a platform to help accelerate delivery of regeneration projects to support the vision laid out in the developing Hyde Masterplan and make improvements to our public realm and greenspaces.

Hyde Regeneration Community grants - now open

Community groups and individuals in Hyde can now apply for grant funding for events, activities, and projects to help improve the vibrancy of the town centre.

The grants are being fully funded from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and offer the chance for Tameside community groups to create and support events and activities which can benefit the whole community.

The events can include arts, cultural, sports or volunteering activities or exhibitions but must be designed to encourage participation and generate footfall in the town centre. They should also look to improve commercial spaces like offices, retail spaces, hospitality, and industrial spaces to support the towns regeneration and adding vibrancy.
Project proposals from groups and individuals must:
  • Take place in Hyde Town centre,
  • Encourage more footfall to the town,
  • Be inclusive and open to all and free to attend,
  • Increase pride and participation in Hyde.

The funds can be used to cover the costs of speakers, arts/crafts, running workshops, developing a play or a film, or any other reasonable costs for holding an activity or event. Expenses for volunteer time, food and refreshments will not be accepted.

‍The funding is available until February 2025, to apply please complete the application form below or by emailing anne.heath@tameside.gov.uk.
