Tameside Serious Violence Strategy 2024-2029

This new strategy is Tameside’s collective response to tackling the causes and impacts of serious violence over the next 5 years. This demonstrates how partners in Tameside are meeting their statutory duties to prevent and reduce serious violence in the area, under the national Serious Violence Duty, which came into effect in 2023.

The key partners in Tameside, working across the Community Safety Partnership, are working together to better understand the root causes of serious violence, and how it impacts people’s lives including the victims and the perpetrators of violence. The key partners responsible for the delivery of this strategy in Tameside are:

  • Tameside Council
  • Greater Manchester Police (GMP)
  • Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS)
  • Probation Services
  • Youth Justice Services
  • NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board (NHS GM ICB)

The strategy takes a public health approach to understanding and addressing the issues which contribute to the harm caused by serious violence, and proposes both short and long term solutions tackle this issue.

The strategy is based on evidence from the Strategic Needs Assessment of Serious Violence in Tameside which was completed in 2023 and can be found on our Joint Strategic Needs Assessment pages. The strategy highlights five key priorities:

  • Priority 1: Community-Led Approach – focus on engaging with residents in Tameside on issues relating to serious violence

  • Priority 2: Early and Timely Intervention – support for children and young people and preventative approaches.

  • Priority 3: Partnerships for Change – engagement and joint working between partners, including ongoing work with the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit

  • Priority 4: Equality, Equity and Justice – targeting the right support for those who need it most in relation to serious violence.

  • Priority 5: Trauma Responsive Support for Communities in Tameside – trauma-responsive approaches, particularly for groups who face additional barriers and are at increased risk from serious violence.
