Food4Life in schools Award

The Tameside School’s Food4Life Award is co-ordinated and managed by the Children Nutrition Team at the Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The Food4Life schools award is a chance for schools to celebrate and be recognised for good practice around healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. It is given to schools that show a whole school approach to the provision and promotion of healthy food. It also ensures that the food being served in school meets School Food Standards. Part of the award involves us analysing the menus and making suggestions for alternatives where this is not the case. Schools in the 20% most deprived in Tameside are targeted first, however this award is offered to all schools in Tameside.

Take a look at what your school would need to do to get the award:
Schools who sign up to an award are visited by a Nutrition Advisor to discuss the award criteria, the assessment also includes a visit at a meal time to observe lunchtime meal provision, as well as talking to a named representative, catering staff and children in the schools care. The award is assessed on a 3 tier scale which allows schools to achieve bronze, silver or gold standard. The Team support the school to work their way up through the levels of the award. In order to achieve an award the school work towards the criteria below:
The school must have:
- At least 1 staff member must have received training from the Children’s Nutrition. Team (for Gold this must be a level 2 training course on Food and Nutrition or Cook and Eat Train the Trainer).
- Healthy eating must be actively promoted in a variety of ways within the school.
- Whole school food policies must be produced, promoted and regularly reviewed.
- All food provided during the school day must meet the school food standards; this includes breakfast clubs, snacks, school meals, after school clubs.
