Nursery Admissions

Admission into nursery classes in Tameside

Nursery place admissions are different from other applications and are made direct to the nursery provider.  For information on how to apply, please see below:

Free Nursery Places

All children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to a free nursery place if their parent/guardian/carer wishes to apply for one. For a child aged 3, the term will begin after their 3rd birthday. Nursery places can be accessed through a variety of providers.

If your child will be 3 or 4 years old between 1st September and 31st August, and you would like to access a part-time nursery place, you should contact the Headteacher of the nursery in question as soon as possible.

Nurseries will keep a list of children and their parents who wish to access places. Places are usually for 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions per week. Nurseries will decide which children are able to access any available places, and you will be informed by the Head Teacher in March if your child was offered a place. In the event that there are more applications than places, places will be given to children based on priority criteria. Please contact your chosen Nursery for details of these criteria.

Parents Not Allocated a Place

Nursery Head Teachers will write to inform parents of the result of their application. In the event you were not allocated a place at your chosen Nursery, you will also receive a booklet of alternative Nurseries and providers with your letter.

Parents should then make their own enquiries to alternate providers to check if there is a place available for their child.

Younger Children

Children who turn 3 years old between 1st September and 31st August, may be offered a place in a Nursery from January, after their 3rd birthday, if places are available. Nurseries cannot save places for ‘rising 3 year olds’.

Contact Us/Further Information

If you need any further information, please contact the Families Information Service on 0161 342 4260.

Please note that attendance at a school nursery does not guarantee a place in the reception class at the same school.

You may wish to apply for a school nursery or a Private, Voluntary or Independent setting. The Family Information Service can provide further information on nursery and childcare settings within Tameside.
