Hearing and Vision 

If you are D/deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind or visually impaired, you can contact the Sensory Service to access the support you need. 

Tameside Sensory Service  

Tameside Sensory Service supports those with visual impairments and hearing loss to live fulfilled lives. The service works in the community and closely with local hospitals and health professionals in and around the borough, supporting people who are:

  • Blind 
  • Partially Sighted.
  • Deafblind (dual sensory)
  • D/deaf
  • Hard of hearing 

People who have sensory loss and other additional needs such as mental health and physical /learning disabilities can also be supported by this service. Assessments for care and support can be completed at home, in the community or at the Vision First Resource Centre.

Through rehabilitation people are supported to re-gain confidence and independence by:

  • Learning new communication skills.
  • Orientation and mobility training.
  • Mail reading/translation for deaf people. 
  • Interpretating for deaf people.

If you are assessed as needing specialist equipment the service can provide this.

Tameside Interpreting and Communication Service 

Tameside’s Sign Language Interpreting Service (TICS) offer a professional and highly qualified interpretation service for deaf people living in Tameside. 

TIC’s can provide an interpreter if you communicate using:

  • British Sign Language (BSL)
  • Sign Supported English (SEE)
  • Deaf/blind manual or hands on. 
  • Lipspeaker (Hard of hearing)
