Specialist Stop Smoking Midwife

Tameside NHS work in partnership with Tameside Population Health to provide pregnant women with a specialist stop smoking midwife who supports and encourages pregnant women to have a healthy, smokefree pregnancy and delivery.

Not smoking during pregnancy can have great benefits for women, children and their families.

“The midwife’s approach was incredibly encouraging. She had lots of alternatives on offer as well as her extensive knowledge on the subject”.

Smoking during pregnancy carries many health risks to both mother and baby such as:

  • Risk of miscarriage
  • Premature birth
  • Low birth weight
  • Foetal growth restriction
  • Neo-natal death
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • pre-eclampsia
  • Deep vein thrombosis,

Babies born to mothers who smoke are twice as likely to die from Sudden Unexplained Death in Infancy (cot death). (info-graphic)
