What to expect from a career in care
Increasingly, in both Care Home and Home Care roles you have the opportunity to gain qualifications including via an apprenticeship route, to undertake specialist training and deliver low-level health care tasks like pressure area care and insulin administration. Both roles can be a useful ‘stepping stone’ towards a nursing or social worker qualification.
If you are interested in becoming a carer you can expect:
- To be paid a fair and attractive wage; our intention is to peg the hourly rate against the Foundation Living Wage https://www.livingwage.org.uk/
- To be offered a contract with a commitment to the weekly hours that suit you
- Paid sick leave and holiday leave
- Innovative training and development including undertaking the Care Certificate https://www.skillsforcare.org.uk/Learning-development/inducting-staff/care-certificate/Care-Certificate.aspx
- To become a named team member for some of the people you support
- To learn and use a range of low level health tasks that allow you to work closely with District Nurses
- Opportunities to progress to more senior roles within the Living Well at Home service
- Use your experience and expertise as a stepping-stone on to a qualification in nursing, social work or allied health care roles if that’s something you’re interested in
- To work closely with a range of professions in the local neighbourhood team to deliver good quality, person centred support to older people and to younger adults
- To, wherever possible, work in a small local patch where you will have the opportunity to get to know the people you support well
