This page provides a list of sources of bespoke help and support for different groups across Tameside and Glossop.

The following list has been compiled to raise awareness of the support available to residents in Tameside & Glossop during this time – many of which are tailored to different needs. We will continue to update this list.

Welfare Rights
Each local authority has a welfare rights service that provides advice on a range of benefit and tax credit entitlements. The advice given by the service is completely independent, impartial, confidential and free. We have no ties to benefit agencies or other interested parties.
The service recognises that individuals must make their own decisions, and that the role of the service is to give people the information they need to be able to exercise their rights.

Citizens Advice Bureau
Tameside CAB: For general advice you can still phone the Greater Manchester helpline on 0300 330 9076 on Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
Derbyshire Districts CAB: The Adviceline is open Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm on 0300 456 8390. All face to face services are suspended until further notice, however telephone appointments are available and can be booked through the Adviceline.
 
Welfare Rights (Out of Hours Support)
(For Tameside) Citizens Advice Greater Manchester (CAGM) is a consortium of all 10 Greater Manchester local Citizens Advice services.
A new helpline is available for all GM residents to call Monday to Sunday from 7pm to 10pm on 0161 850 5053. Calls are charged at local rates. This service will increase access to generalist and specialist advice in:
  • Debt and Money Advice
  • Welfare Rights and access to Benefits
  • Housing and Mortgage
  • Employment
For Glossop, Citizens Advice Derbyshire Districts phonelines are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on 0300 456 8390.
 
LGBT+ helpline
COVID-19 is having a significant impact on many LGBTQ+ people with family tensions during lockdown, new levels of isolation and domestic abuse being some of the issues that have been highlighted. Colleagues at the Switchboard LGBT+ helpline (0300 330 0630) are raising awareness that their helpline is still open and they’re continuing to support those in need during this time.

Albert Kennedy Trust
AKT are still working with LGBTQ+ young people aged up to 25.  Staff are working from home and able to support young people with a range of services including live chat (https://www.akt.org.uk/, between 10am and 6pm), a variety of online activities and resources (https://www.akt.org.uk/blog/aktogether-online) and one to one support with staff usually accessed at by completing a referral form at https://www.akt.org.uk/get-help2

Nestac Manchester
NESTAC is a non-profit organisation that supports Africans and immigrants in Greater Manchester. They are made up of registered mental health practitioners and psychotherapists. They have launched a Covid-19 support line for BAME communities in Greater Manchester. This includes anyone recovering from Covid-19, their relatives or friends, those who are bereaved as a result of Covid-19 and BAME women/girls who have been victims to abuse. Cross-cultural advice is given and tailored psychotherapy for those in need. Support in English, French, Somali, Kurdish, Swahili, Urdu, Arabic and more.

South Asian Health Foundation
South Asian Health Foundation (SAHF) is a registered charity founded in 1999 to promote good health in the UK’s South Asian communities. We are one of the UK’s leading British Asian health charities. Their mission is to  assist persons living in the U.K., particularly those of South Asian origin, who are experiencing conditions of sickness, hardship or distress. Flowhesion Foundation
The Flowhesion Foundation ordinarily work to build community cohesion and promote the rule of law, democracy, individual liberty and tolerance. To this end manage projects, advise public sector, deliver training, undertake research on a national level.
Flowhesion provide the following COVID19 support services to communities:
  • A dedicated team of professional Counsellors
  • Experienced call handlers to give financial advice, faith based support, help translating/ interpreting, completing key forms etc.

Race Equality Foundation

Europia
Europia works to help EU nationals in Greater Manchester. They have created a new website to  bringing together their COVID-19 response, including their Emergency Fund. The fund is for vulnerable EU nationals living across Greater Manchester, grants of £30-60 are available to purchase essential supplies. Applications are open and can be submitted online or over the phone by contacting:

Europia is also working with Doctors of the World, providing them with translations of COVID-19 NHS Guidance into Bulgarian, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian and Lithuanian. They have also set up a befriending phone-line service for Polish people who are over-50 years old. 

Talk Rona
Are you from a South Asian community living in Manchester, Trafford or Tameside and have been affected by Covid-19? Call 0300 323 0612 or Whatsapp 07960 213 753. We offer free advice and support in Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali. Available Monday-Friday between 9am and 9pm
 
Tameside Carers Centre
While walk-in access has been temporarily suspended, carers can still get information, advice and support by calling 0161 342 3344.

Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)  
RNIB have suspended most face-to-face activities, including groups and events, until further notice. In the meantime RNIB’s Helpline remains open on weekdays from 8am to 8pm and on Saturdays 9am to 5pm – 0303 123 9999

Mencap
Mecap’s Learning Disability Helpline is a free helpline service offering advice and support for people with a learning disability, and their families and carers. Mind Matters Call In
A new direct telephone line for people wanting support for their mental health and emotional wellbeing. The Peer support workers and mental wellbeing practitioners will offer direct support over the phone and also support people into other services as required. Available from 10am until 2pm Monday to Friday. Call 0161 470 6100. Anyone aged 16+ can contact this number.

Greater Manchester Mental Health

Kooth
Kooth is an online counselling and emotional well-being platform for children and young people aged 11 to 18 years. Kooth provides:
  • Live chat function for a CYP to converse with a qualified counsellor;
  • Messaging function for children and young people to contact the service, these are monitored and managed by counsellors, emotional wellbeing practitioners and media workers;
  • Crisis information, and self-help resources
The digital platform, which is available on any web-enabled, internet connected device (including laptop, smart phone, tablet) is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Off the Record
Off the Record offer  person-centred 1:1 counselling service for children and young people aged 10-25 in Tameside Specialist 1:1 counselling. Weekly drop-in for young people in ‘immediate crisis’ including skype drop-in.

Minds Matter
Minds Matter supports people with mild to moderate common mental health problems. Mental Wellbeing Practitioners, Peer Support Workers and Counsellors who can help you to manage and overcome your difficulties via; counselling, one-to-one support, groups, drop-in support and coaching.

Tameside, Oldham and Glossop Mind
Mind is a mental health wellbeing centre offering counselling, courses, workshops, advice, drop-ins e.g. welfare rights and housing support, veggie cafe and internet access. The types of courses available to support children and young people include; emotional wellbeing and mental health resilience, school training and the Hive. The hive is a safe space for children & young peoples to come and get involved in activities or access some help for issues or problems in their lives. Some services delivered differently due to restrictions.

Healthy Minds Pennine Care Foundation Trust
Healthy Minds is a talking therapies service. Providing support and treatment for those who are experiencing symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, low mood / depression, stress, worry or anxiety, feelings of hopelessness or panic attacks. Healthy Minds also offer a service for complicated bereavements and adjustments to life events (6-12 months post incident).
The service offers an online therapy programme called SilverCloud which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can start the therapy straight away and it can be done at a time and place that suits you.
The service is open to anyone aged 16 years+ self-referral/ professional referral. The service is providing remote telephone therapies where clinically indicated.

Homestart – Oldham, Stockport & Tameside
Homestart support volunteers support to families with individual one-to-one home visiting and targeted support to new parents and children on a range of matters such as breastfeeding and parenting. They are continuing to do whatever they can to maintain regular contact with those in need but some staff may continue to do this via Skype or Zoom.

SSAFA have compiled some FAQs for those ex-servicemen and women living in Greater Manchester who require support and how to access it in times of social restrictions and closure of offices.
