Please note, Healthy Start application forms no longer need PART B signing and stamping before sending off, meaning families can send the application form off without PART B being completed.

You can call the National Healthy Start Scheme helpline if you are struggling to print off or complete your application, please call 0345 607 6823. The call handler will complete the application form with the you over the phone and they will then print your completed application form out and send it to you (along with a freepost envelope) in the post awaiting your signature. You will then need to send your signed application form off in the post using the freepost envelope that was sent out with your application form.
Alternatively where possible, applications still need to be completed on paper, signed by the applicant and posted to the Healthy Start issuing unit. If you are struggling to download and print the application form off, please call Tameside Customer Services on 0161 342 3494 and 0161 342 2284 or email who will be happy to print you an application form off and send it to you in the post for you to complete. Once you receive your application form you will then need to complete it and send it off in the post to:

About the Healthy Start scheme

Having access to good nutrition is key to supporting the very best start in life for little ones and Healthy Start vouchers can help families give their little ones just that.

The Healthy Start Vouchers can be used at local shops support families to buy milk and fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables. If eligible, you will get:
  • £4.25 each week of your pregnancy (from the 10th week of your pregnancy)
  • £8.50 each week for children from birth to 1 year old
  • £4.25 each week for children between 1 and 4 years old
Your money will stop after your child’s 4th birthday, or if you no longer receive benefits.

Eligibility (who can apply for the vouchers)

You qualify for Healthy Start vouchers if you’re at least 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old and you and your family get:
  • Income support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit (with a family income of £16,190 or less per year)
  • Universal Credit (with a family take home pay of £408 or less per month)
To find out if your family earns £408 or less per month from employment whilst claiming Universal Credit, look at your ‘take-home pay for this period’ on your monthly Universal Credit award notice.

The Department of Health and Social Care has recently (June 2021) agreed to temporarily extend the Healthy Start scheme to British children (aged 0-4), whose parent/guardian meet the financial eligibility criteria and are excluded from claiming public funds as a consequence of their immigration status.
If you think you qualify for the temporary extension and that you meet all the following criteria:

  • you have a child, or more than one child, who is aged 0-4;
  • your families take-home pay is less than £408 per month; and
  • your immigration status includes the condition that you cannot access public funds

How to apply

If you think you qualify, all you need to do is complete your application form, these are easy to get hold of and can be found online or your key worker may already have one to hand.

If you have a key worker who can support you in completing your Healthy Start application form and you think you could do with a little support in completing it, ask for their support.

Pop it in the post using the FREEPOST envelope.
You can also call the Healthy Start Helpline on 0345 607 6823 and ask them to send you an application by post, or ask for their support in completing the application form if you are not able to print or complete it yourself.

Co Op

Central England Co-op is giving people who use Healthy Start vouchers an extra £1 to spend on vital food and essentials. The retailer has committed to providing all those who present the vouchers in its stores an extra £1. Co-op have also committed to continue the scheme after the value of the vouchers increases in April 2021 to £4.25, meaning families will have £5.25 to spend in their stores. To claim the extra £1, all people have to do is present their vouchers at the till point and the colleague will automatically add on the extra £1 on top of the vouchers supplied
