The exciting vision and masterplan approved for Hyde town centre has been shaped by the people that live, work, and visit the town.

The masterplan will help kick-start the regeneration process, showing clear potential and inviting funders investors to help make the plans for Hyde town centre a reality.

Put together by a consultant team including GL Hearn and HemingwayDesign, it was shaped by the views of over 1600 people who put their thoughts to paper during public consultation last summer. Addressing Hyde’s weaknesses, strengths, and opportunities, the survey asked what people wanted to see and needed in the town that would attract more residents and visitors to help increase footfall and income in the town centre.

The masterplan will build on Hyde’s unique character and shape the town into a place that both the existing and future community and generations can take pride in.

The council will use existing funding available, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the recent £237,000 High Street Accelerator Seed Funding to enable the start of the plans and help raise the town’s profile to attract private investment.

The creation of the masterplan in only the start of the journey and there are several steps that we need to take and high on the agenda will be the sourcing of further funding and partnerships which could help reach the ambitions for the town.

Key objectives include improvements to key assets in the town including the Town Hall, Market Square, and Clarendon Shopping Centre. The Council will continue to work with key partners including the Hyde Accelerator Partnership, and community groups as well as the new owners of the Clarendon Shopping Centre to realise ambitions for the town.

Hyde High Street Accelerator Funding

The Government announced in 2024 that Hyde town centre would be one of 10 high streets to receive a £237,000 seed funding and become part of the High Street Accelerator pilot programme.

The aim of the High Street Accelerators is to create partnerships that empower residents and community organisations to work together on long-term regeneration plans. After the initial funding there will be a further opportunity to apply for a share of up to £5 million to improve Hyde’s green spaces and move forward on projects that will create more pleasant environments for residents to meet and socialise in.

This will provide a platform to help accelerate delivery of regeneration projects to support the vision laid out in the developing Hyde Masterplan and make improvements to our public realm and greenspaces.

Improvements to Hyde Market Ground

Hyde TownThe approved Hyde town Centre Masterplan has identified a number of areas for improvement across the town. The Market Ground in Hyde is one of the areas highlighted where a more flexible space for markets and events could be created, enhanced with new planting which would encourage more people to visit the town.

Following a workshop and discussion with market traders, a programme of improvements to the outdoor market facilities will be starting next week. Using UKSPF funding, a number of the fixed market stalls will be removed and replaced with a more flexible parasol provision. Two of the existing fixed stalls will remain.

The works are part of a series of improvements across the town centre including projects being progressed by the Hyde Accelerator Partnership Group. These works will include tree maintenance, replanting of granite planters, improvements to Millenium Park, and new tree planting along Clarendon Street.

In addition, there will also be a number of exciting events over the coming months including the Lantern Parade and a Christmas Market being delivered in partnership with The Hyde Accelerator Delivery Group.

Hyde Regeneration Community grants

Community groups and individuals in Hyde have been able to apply for grant funding for events, activities, and projects to help improve the vibrancy of the town centre.

The grants are being fully funded from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and offer the chance for Tameside community groups to create and support events and activities which can benefit the whole community.

The events include arts, cultural, sports or volunteering activities or exhibitions but must be designed to encourage participation and generate footfall in the town centre. They should also look to improve commercial spaces like offices, retail spaces, hospitality, and industrial spaces to support the towns regeneration and adding vibrancy.

Project proposals from groups and individuals must:

  • Take place in Hyde Town centre,
  • Encourage more footfall to the town,
  • Be inclusive and open to all and free to attend,
  • Increase pride and participation in Hyde.

The funds can be used to cover the costs of speakers, arts/crafts, running workshops, developing a play or a film, or any other reasonable costs for holding an activity or event. Expenses for volunteer time, food and refreshments will not be accepted.

This funding has now been fully allocated. Any additional information on further funding available will be updated on this page so please check back or get in touch with the team.
