Section 1 – Your relationship
Think about how you and the other person usually communicate. Open whichever statements feel closest to your experience. More than one may feel true at different times.
Reflection card: We usually talk it through and resolve it calmly.
Reveal the insight: This is a positive sign. Being able to listen, talk calmly and find a way forward can help you and your children feel secure, even when adults do not always agree.
Reflection card: Sometimes it becomes heated, but we eventually work it out.
Reveal the insight: Most relationships experience disagreements. What matters is whether you can calm things down, listen to each other and repair things afterwards. If the same disagreements keep returning, some additional support might help.
Reflection card: One or both of us avoids talking about it, sweeps it under the carpet or shuts down.
Reveal the insight:Avoiding a difficult conversation can bring temporary relief, but the issue may remain unresolved. People sometimes withdraw because they feel overwhelmed or do not know how to talk without raising their voice. Support may help you find a different way to communicate.
Reflection card:One or both of us ends up shouting or arguing and nothing gets resolved.
Reveal the insight: Repeated, unresolved arguments can be exhausting for everyone, including you and your children. Children can be affected even when they are not in the room. Relationship support may help you understand the pattern and find calmer ways to communicate.
Reflection card:I feel frightened during disagreements.
Reveal the insight: Nobody should feel frightened in a relationship with a current/former partner or anyone else. If you are worried about your safety or about how the other person may react, specialist domestic abuse support is available. You do not need to speak to the other person about this before seeking help.
Reflection card: Always.
Reveal the insight: Feeling consistently heard can make it easier to solve problems together. Keep making space for both people to speak and to check that you have understood each other.
Reflection card: Often.
Reveal the insight: It sounds as though listening is generally present, although there may be times when it becomes harder. Noticing what helps you both listen well can strengthen communication.
Reflection card: Sometimes.
Reveal the insight: Feeling heard only some of the time can leave important issues unresolved. It may help to think about when listening becomes difficult and what each person needs for a calmer conversation.
Reflection card: Rarely.
Reveal the insight: Regularly feeling unheard can lead to frustration, withdrawal or repeated arguments. Support may help if both people can take part freely and safely.
Reflection card: Never.
Reveal the insight: Not feeling listened to at all can be lonely and distressing. If you are dismissed, silenced or afraid to speak because of the other person’s reaction, consider speaking privately to a specialist support service.
Reflection card: Always.
Reveal the insight: Being able to approach problems as a team is a strong foundation. Children benefit too when adults can disagree, make decisions and move forward respectfully.
Reflection card: Often.
Reveal the insight: If you are to solve most problems together regularly, that’s really helpful. Thinking about what works when things are going well may help when a more difficult issue arises.
Reflection card: Sometimes.
Reveal the insight: Some problems may be manageable while others can feel more difficult. Support can help you identify recurring patterns and agree on practical ways to make decisions.
Reflection card: Rarely.
Reveal the insight: When most problems remain unresolved, stress can build across the family. Relationship support can help, provided both people can participate calmly, safely and without pressure.
Reflection card: Never.
Reveal the insight: Feeling unable to solve any problems together may mean you need outside support. If decisions are controlled by one person or you are frightened of disagreeing, seek individual domestic abuse support rather than joint work.
Reflection card: Always.
Reveal the insight: A respectful parenting relationship helps children experience consistency and security. Respect does not require agreement on everything; it means differences can be handled without belittling or undermining each other.
Reflection card: Often.
Reveal the insight: There is a good basis to build on. Notice the situations in which respect becomes harder and how you return to working together.
Reflection card: Sometimes.
Reveal the insight: An inconsistent sense of respect can make parenting decisions more difficult. Support may help you agree on how to communicate and keep the child’s needs central.
Reflection card: Rarely.
Reveal the insight: Frequent criticism, hostility or undermining can affect both adults and children. Parenting or relationship support may help where it is safe for both people to take part.
Reflection card: Never.
Reveal the insight: A parenting relationship that never feels respectful deserves attention. If disrespect includes intimidation, threats, humiliation or control, seek confidential domestic abuse support before considering any joint work.
