A series of proposals were developed by Tameside Council, in partnership with Onward Homes and Jigsaw Homes to benefit Hattersley & Mottram residents with the aim of creating a more functional, attractive, diverse and safe living environment.
Funding was made available to invest in a number of the proposals, so feedback from the public was crucial to help prioritise what is most important to the local area. Feedback was sought on connections (paths cycle lanes, underpasses), highways, play and recreation facilities and management and maintenance.
Several public events were held where the proposals were available in paper and online and paper surveys were created for the public to have their say.
Respondents were largely made up of residents from Onward Homes as well as respondents who work in the Hattersley/Mottram area.
Nearly three quarters of those who responded said they felt the proposals would represent a major improvement to the area.
When asked which of the proposals they felt was of the highest importance the area, play & recreation facilities came at the top. Furthermore, play & recreation was selected as the facility where people most wanted investment. The proposals where people wanted investment the least was gateways (such as Hattersley train station and improvements to key roads).
Nearly 90% were in favour of having one organisation in charge of managing and maintaining the area’s public realm.
The responses submitted were used to shape priorities for the area during 2018-2023. Onward have now confirmed that these are as follows:
- To progress the development of the Multi Use Games Area and other play facilities
- To improve access to and through Waterside Clough
- To progress the delivery of some priority parking courts and bays
- To begin improvements to the Hattersley Road West and Mottram Road Gateway
- To improve the general appearance of the neighbourhood
The next steps will be to develop the proposals in more detail, for example planning permission, costs and designs.
