You Said We Did – Tame Valley Employment Area Planning

We AskedWe asked business owners, residents and workers in Tameside to ‘have your say’ on a draft Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for the South Tame Valley employment area.

The role of the SPD is to help guide future development within the South Tame Valley Employment Area. It highlights the importance of enabling employment generating development to take place at the best locations available, to meet Tameside’s employment objectives. The SPD contains a number of policies which will assist both developers and resident businesses alike when designing schemes and help the Council to make consistent decisions when assessing planning applications.

The consultation ran for 6 weeks. During this time the SPD together with its accompanying documents were made available via the Council’s website, with reference copies available in libraries, the customer service centre and planning departments.

Consultees on the draft SPD included local politicians, statutory bodies and other interested parties including attendees of previous workshop events. Emails/letters were sent to individuals and organisations informing them of the consultation. In addition a notice was placed in the press and a press release issued.

Respondents were invited to provide in writing comments to the planning department prior to the end of the consultation period.

You Said

Responses were received from 9 statutory bodies and national organisations. 2 stated that they would not/could not comment on the SPD, but welcomed the focus on economic activity within the area.

Respondents welcomed the SPD’s focus on economic activity in the area. Of the 6 remaining comments (Natural England, Coal Authority, the Canals and Rivers Trust, Health & Safety Executive and Peak and Northern Footpaths Society) raised points regarding their areas of focus as organisations. This included issues such as protecting natural resources, biodiversity and consideration of the landscape when development is proposed. Another response was keen to ensure that the SPD was compliant with the NPPF guidelines and up to date.

We Did

  1. We recognised the need to consider the natural landscape upon receipt of proposals of development or redevelopment of sites.
  2. We will deal with any applications for development that concern the protection of mineral resources or any underlying safety issues, and deal with any issues on a case by case basis
  3. We inserted a paragraph into the SPD recognising the need to consider opportunities for the long term protection and enhancement of heritage assets in the area, for examples the Grade II listed Dukinfield Old Hall.
  4. We acknowledge that any applications for development will be subject to policies such as nature conservation factors and the appearance of rivers and valleys which will address issues with landscape enhancement.
  5. We acknowledged that any applications for development must be complaint with policies affecting public rights of way and recreational footpaths.
