Bee Connected for Care Leavers in Greater Manchester

BeeConnected on the App StoreCare leavers in Greater Manchester will be able to use a new app to help them find and access support, offers and opportunities that are available to them, in one place.

The app builds on the work of the Greater Manchester Care Leavers Guarantee that was launched in 2019 – find out more by exploring the booklet here.

The app, that has recently launched, has been developed by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and digital agency Focusgov following feedback from care leavers that support available to them wasn’t always easy to find.

The app will support care leavers and let them know what they are entitled to and what support and opportunities are on offer to them. The offers include free bus passes, free prescriptions, support to access higher education, employment and training and a free digital device.

The new care leavers’ app can be downloaded for free by searching ‘BeeConnected’ in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Let’s Celebrate

Celebrating a successful start the new school year !
Well done to all our cared for children and young people on a fantastic start to the school year 2022. The Virtual School and College team are very impressed with all the efforts our children and young people have been putting in during the first half-term. Last half-term 210 students achieved 100% attendance and 267 students had between 95 and 100% attendance, which is an outstanding effort! The overall attendance for our cared for children was 90.4%.

A child’s attendance has a huge impact on their educational progress and outcomes – it’s important to encourage good attendance and avoid any unnecessary absences.
Here is an overview of how attendance impacts on a child’s learning:
  • If a child has 100% attendance, it means they are attending every day – fantastic!
  • 90% attendance - this actually equates to missing around 4 weeks of school per year
  • If they have 80% attendance, this results in them missing more than half a term each year – very worrying!
  • 70% attendance = more than a quarter of the school year missed– shocking when you think of the amount of lessons they will have missed in this time!
  • Lateness - if the child is 5 minutes late every day, they will miss three days of learning each year. If your child is 15 minutes late every day, they will miss 2 weeks of learning each year

It has been a great start to the new school year, and we look forward to continuing to support all our cared for children and young people throughout the year.

Wonderful Work
BookWe love to receive examples of wonderful work produced by our amazing cared for children. Here is one example we have recently had submitted by a year 4 student. Don’t forget, if you have work you are particularly proud of, please share it with us at: admin.virtualschool@tameside.gov.uk
