Fleas

Frequently Asked Questions

How many types of fleas are there?

There are 4 types of fleas.

Where are they found?

The fleas can be found on the bodies of Cats, Dogs, Rats and Humans.

What do fleas feed on?

Fleas feed on what are called 'blood' meals.

How can I prevent fleas?

If you think you have fleas you can put flea powder into your vacuum before vacuuming the floor and soft furnishings. If your vacuum doesn't have a bag you can buy insecticidal dust. Then throw the bag or empty the vacuum straight away.

Always ensure your premises are cleaned on a regular basis. This prevents the fleas from making a breeding site.

If you have pets make sure they are treated with flea treatments or by the veterinary surgeon. Keep your pets off beds and bedding.

What is the treatment?

The treatment the Pest Control Officer uses is an insecticide.

What advice can you give me before the pest controller arrives?

Tidy up, remove pets and make sure the floor area is clear.

Can you get infested with fleas all the year round?

Yes you can but particularly in August and September.

What do I have to do after the treatment?

After the treatment you must not vacuum for at least 7-10 days as this will remove the insecticide. The treatment will take up to 48 hours to react. The treatment may take a few weeks to be entirely successful.
