A Knitted History: From Socks to Sheds

24 September 2011 - 4 February 2012

Do you know your Fair Isle from your Aran? Your knit from your purl? Or do you have a passion for vintage?

If so, don’t miss this new exhibition looking at the history of knitting and its recent revival.

The opening of “A Knitted History” coincides with National Knitting Week and is inspired by the renewed interest in the craft.

Visitors have the opportunity to admire some samples of stitching and regional patterns. And you can learn more about the origins of knitting, its growth as a leisurely pastime in the Victorian era, and its huge popularity during the two world wars when women knitted gloves and balaclavas for men at the front or serving at sea.

In the 1980s, knitting began to be viewed as a pastime for grannies. But this has now been overturned and women (and men) are once again taking up the needles.
