Single Person Discount
Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
The full Council Tax bill assumes that there are two adults living in a property.
If only one adult lives in the property (as their main home) the bill may be reduced by 25%.
Code 01 on the Council Tax bill indicates that a single person discount has been awarded.
Am I entitled?
My partner is a member of the forces/works away and only comes home occasionally.
No - This property will still be deemed as their sole/main residence because there is an intention to return to the property.
My daughter has just turned 18 but will be away at college.
Depends - Is this address still considered to be her main home? - if yes, she is still counted as living here for discount purposes*. If, for example, she has rented a property near college with no intention to return to live at home then you will qualify for single person discount whilst you remain the sole adult in the property. If she still resides with you she may be classed as a disregarded person. Follow this link for the Fulltime Student form
A friend is coming to stay for a month's holiday.
Yes - They will not be considered as having changed their main residence and are therefore not counted.
How do I claim?
You can complete an application form on line. if you have also changed address and moved to a new property, please complete the Change of Address form on https://www.tameside.gov.uk/counciltax/movinghome
Single Person Discount can be awarded following a claim for benefit, if it is evident from that claim that there is only one adult occupying the property as their main home.
If someone leaves your property and you are the sole remaining adult, let us know:-
- who has left,
- the date they left and;
- their forwarding address.
How long will the discount last?
The discount will continue for as long as you occupy the property as a sole adult.
The following types of changes may affect your discount and you should let us know if:
- Another adult comes to stay with you and they occupy the property as their main home*
- A child reaches the age of 18*
- You leave the property on a permanent basis*
We need this information to enable us to fulfil our duty to keep the Authority's records up to date.
If you have any change of circumstances and you are unsure whether they will affect your entitlement please ask.
* Even though you may no longer be entitled to single person discount you may still qualify for an alternative reduction, please see discounts and second adult rebate.
