Neglect

Parents & CarersChildren & Young PeopleProfessionalsTraining

Sometimes, parents find it hard to look after their children because of difficult circumstances; if Mum or Dad, or the carers that look after you, have some problems themselves, they can find it difficult to be there for their children and to give them the things that they need to be safe and happy at home. Things like:

  • Having enough food to eat
  • Having clothes that are clean, the right size and that are right for the weather
  • Feeling safe at home
  • Being able to talk to your parents if you feel very upset
  • Feeling happy and loved

Just Like Me?

Does this sound like you? Childline say, “If you’re not getting the important things you need at home, you could be being neglected.”

Neglect is when a person isn’t cared for properly and is not kept safe from harm.

Neglect is not your fault. It means that you and your family need help and support to make sure everyone is happy, healthy, safe and cared for.

If you want more information about what neglect means and where you can get advice and support:

  • Childline
  • NSPCC
  • Telephone 0800 1111 if you want to talk to someone confidentially (confidentially means it is just between you and the other person. They won’t tell anyone else what you have told them unless they feel you may be in danger).
