Virtual Library ClubThe Great American Songbook

Composers such as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Harry Warren, Hoagy Carmichael and many others, between them, wrote thousands of richly melodic masterpieces, with equally memorable lyrics, which became known as “The Great American Songbook”.
In this talk, Roger Browne traces the history and music of the genre and illustrates it with live examples on the piano, and hilarious stories about the people, places and events of the time.

 

Roger Browne

Roger Browne has been the pianist with internationally renowned Manchester Jazz since 1995, is currently President of Stockport Operatic Society and Artistic Director/President of the historic Manchester Athenaeum Drama Society. He has contributed as musician, writer, director, actor, and singer in the fields of Drama, Musical Theatre, Comedy, Jazz and Grand Opera since 1959.
